Use the Tax Charged in Shopify

With this tax source, every order uses the total tax that Shopify reports for it. It fits almost every store: any store that charges tax through Shopify, whether prices include tax or tax is added at checkout. It is the default for a new store.

Select the Shopify Tax#

There is no Save button: each control is saved when you change it.

The sample store in the screenshot uses Automatic calculation, so its Calculation method can be changed.

What Happens Next#

• Changing Tax source, Calculation method or Import tax from Shopify recalculates the tax of all existing orders of the store. The window Recalculating reports shows the progress in orders. It closes by itself a few seconds after it has finished.
• While the recalculation runs, the controls on the store settings pages are locked.
• A large store can take a few minutes. You can close the window and keep working, the recalculation continues.
• New orders always use the current setting when they are imported.

With this source the Tax page is read-only. It shows the notice Using Shopify-reported tax, and Add Tax Rates, Set Up and Edit are greyed out. Rates you saved earlier stay stored and are not used.

Limits#

• An order for which Shopify reports no tax counts $0.00 tax. If your Shopify orders carry no tax or the wrong tax, see Calculate Order Tax with Your Own Rates.
• A tax amount you entered by hand on a single order always wins and is not recalculated. See How to Manually Change the Cost of an Order.

Troubleshooting#

The Tax row shows $0.00. Shopify reports no tax on your orders. Set up tax in Shopify, or switch to Automatic calculation and enter your own rates: see Calculate Order Tax with Your Own Rates.

Tax source is locked. Import tax from Shopify is off. Turn it on to select Shopify reported again. The source you selected before is restored.

Calculation method is locked. It only applies to Automatic calculation.

All settings on the page are greyed out. A recalculation for this store is running. The controls unlock when it has finished.
