Choose Where Order Tax Comes From (Tax & VAT)
Updated October 3, 2026
Order tax is the sales tax or VAT contained in what your customers pay. It is not your money, so Profitario deducts it from revenue before it calculates profit. You choose where the amount comes from: the tax Shopify reports on each order, or your own tax rates per country. The guides below cover each one.
- Where
- In the sidebar: Store settings > Tax & VAT for the tax source, and Tax (under Costs) for the rates per country
- Who
- Every store. Most stores keep the Shopify tax. Stores whose Shopify orders carry no or wrong tax enter their own rates
- Updates
- Changing the tax source recalculates the tax of all existing orders

What Is on the Tax Pages#

Two Tax Sources#
| Tax source | What it does | Fits when | Guide |
|---|---|---|---|
| Shopify reported | Every order uses the tax Shopify reports for it. The default | You charge tax through Shopify | Use the Tax Charged in Shopify |
| Automatic calculation | Calculates the tax from the order total and a rate per country | Your Shopify orders carry no tax or the wrong tax | Calculate Order Tax with Your Own Rates |
Limits#
- The tax source and the rates are set per store.
- One rate per country, and one calculation method for the whole store.
- Refunded tax always comes from Shopify, with either source.
- A tax amount you entered by hand on a single order always wins over both sources and is not recalculated.
