How to Add Product Costs
Updated October 8, 2026
Type what you pay for one unit of a product, and Profitario deducts it from every order that contains the product. This guide covers entering a cost for a whole product or per variant, saving it, and removing it again. What the rest of the page does is explained in How Product Costs Work.
- Where
- In the sidebar, open Product Costs.
- Who
- Every store that knows its costs. No supplier or Shopify cost needed.
- Time
- A few seconds per product. Many products at once: use a file import instead.
- Updates
- Saved costs apply to all orders, past and future. Recalculation takes minutes.
Add a Cost for a Whole Product#
When every variant of a product costs the same, enter the cost once on the product row.

In the screenshot, the Walnut Serving Board has no cost yet: Coverage shows 1 to cost and Sold shows its 461 units without a cost in amber. After typing 24.00 and 1.50, a P badge appears: the cost is set on the product and applies to every variant. Once you apply, the product shows Costed.
Add Costs per Variant#
When variants cost different amounts, for example a larger size, expand the product and enter each variant's cost.

When variants have different costs, the product row shows a V badge and the cost range, for example 8.50–9.60, and the product field is usually greyed out. Edit the variants instead.
If you change filters or leave the page with unsaved edits, Profitario asks first. Discard changes throws the edits away.
What Happens Next#
- Profitario recalculates every order that contains the product, from the first order on. A progress dialog shows while this runs; large stores take a few minutes.
- The cost then shows in the dashboard and reports as product cost, and on each order under its Costs tab.
- A cost typed here replaces the product's cost for all past orders too. If the product has price changes, only the ongoing period is replaced: earlier periods keep their own cost. If your supplier price changed at some date, keep the old cost for the old orders: see How to Add Cost Changes Over Time (Price Changes).
Example
You sell the Walnut Serving Board for $59.00. You pay $24.00 per board and $1.50 to pack it. An order with 2 boards:
| Line | Amount |
|---|---|
| Revenue | 2 × $59.00 = $118.00 |
| Product cost | 2 × $24.00 = −$48.00 |
| Handling | 2 × $1.50 = −$3.00 |
| Left for shipping, fees, ads and profit | $67.00 |
Before the cost was entered, the full $118.00 counted toward profit.
Remove a Cost#
Hover a product row and click the trash icon at its end. On an expanded product, each variant row has its own trash icon.

Deleting cannot be undone. The affected orders fall back to the next available cost, for example a Shopify cost or a margin rule, or show as missing a cost.
Limits#
- Costs are per single unit and in your store's currency. They are not converted from another currency.
- A cost typed here is one cost for the product's whole history. Different costs per period, per quantity or per country are separate tools: How to Add Cost Changes Over Time (Price Changes), How to Add Quantity-Based Costs (Quantity Breaks), How to Add Country-Specific Costs (Cost Zones).
- On a zone tab, the cost you type applies only to orders shipped to that zone. The Default tab applies everywhere else.
