Expense Categories
Updated October 2, 2026
Every operating expense has a category. It decides where the expense is grouped in the Expense Report and in your reports. These categories are built in:
| Category | Typical expenses |
|---|---|
| Insurance | Business and liability insurance |
| Inventory & Stock | Storage and stock costs not tied to a product |
| Marketing & Advertising | Agencies, photo shoots, influencer fees |
| Other | Anything that fits nowhere else |
| Payroll & Staff | Salaries, wages, contractors |
| Penalties & Fines | Late fees and fines |
| Professional Services | Bookkeeping, tax advice, legal fees |
| Purchases | One-off purchases such as equipment |
| Rent & Facilities | Office, warehouse, storage rent |
| Shipping & Fulfillment | Flat fulfillment or warehouse fees per month |
| Subscriptions | Recurring services that are not apps |
| Supplies | Office and packing supplies bought in bulk |
| Taxes & Duties | Business taxes that are not order tax |
| Transaction Fees | Flat monthly fees of a payment provider |
| Utilities | Electricity, internet, phone |
You cannot add your own categories. Use Other and a clear expense name when none fits.
Marketing & Advertising is treated as marketing spend. Its expenses are deducted from Net Profit like all others, and they also count toward the blended marketing figures on the dashboard (for example MER) and appear under Marketing in the Income Statement. Do not enter ad spend of a connected ad account here, it would count twice.
