Change, Upgrade or Downgrade Your Plan
Updated October 4, 2026
You can move to a larger or smaller plan at any time. The change goes through Shopify, and the new plan applies as soon as you approve it there. This article shows where to click, what Shopify charges, and what happens to your usage, stores and limits.
- Where
- Click your name at the bottom of the sidebar, then Billing > Plans.
- Who
- Owners, admins and members with access to all stores. Viewers cannot change the plan, and team members limited to selected stores do not see Billing.
- Time
- About 2 minutes
- Updates
- The new plan, its order allowance and its limits apply as soon as you approve the charge in Shopify. Usage charges follow the new plan from the next daily billing.
Change Your Plan#
In the sidebar, Billing is listed under Account. From inside a store, click your name at the bottom of the sidebar, then Billing.

Approve the charge in Shopify. Shopify opens its own approval page in your store's admin. It shows the plan name (for example Profitario Enterprise), the price every 30 days and, for plans with a usage charge, the usage terms, for example $0.05 per order above 3,500 orders/month (max $1000/month). Approve the subscription there. Nothing changes until you do: if you close the page or decline, you keep your current plan.
Back in Profitario. After the approval, Shopify sends you back to Profitario. You see Confirming your subscription…, then Subscription active, and a moment later the Subscription page with your new plan on the Current Plan card.
Moving to the Free plan is a cancellation, not a plan change. Clicking Downgrade in the Free column opens the cancel dialog. See How Can I Cancel My Subscription?.
What Happens When You Approve#
The new plan applies right away. Its included orders, overage rate, overage cap and store limit replace the old ones within seconds. This is true for upgrades and for downgrades.
The old subscription ends. Shopify replaces it with the new one, so you never pay two subscriptions at the same time. Billing History lists the new plan as Active and the old one as Cancelled.
Shopify settles the price difference. For the days left in your current 30-day Shopify billing cycle, Shopify charges the difference on an upgrade and credits it on a downgrade. Profitario does not add any charge or refund of its own. Shopify describes the rules in its proration documentation.
The account owner gets an email. It is titled Subscription Changed and names the old and the new plan.
Your data stays as it is. Orders, costs, settings and integrations are not touched by a plan change.
Example: what Shopify charges
You pay $55 for Growth every 30 days. On day 10 of the cycle you upgrade to Pro ($100). 20 of 30 days are left.
- Upgrade charge for the rest of the cycle
- ($100 − $55) × 2030= $30.00
The same move the other way, from Pro to Growth on day 10, gives a credit of $30.00 on your Shopify bill.
Usage Charges After a Change#
Orders are counted per calendar month for the whole account (see How Does the Usage Charge Work?). A plan change does not restart the count. The new plan's allowance and rate are compared with all orders of the month so far.
Upgrade. Orders that were above the old allowance but are within the new one cost nothing more. Usage charges already billed this month stay on your bill and are deducted from any usage charge that comes up later in the month under the new plan.
Downgrade. The smaller allowance applies to the whole month at once. If your month-to-date count is already above it, the difference is billed with the next daily usage charge.
Cap. The new plan's overage cap applies to the whole calendar month, including usage charges billed before the change.
Example: upgrade in the middle of the month
You are on Starter (300 orders included, $0.30 per extra order). On October 12 you have 450 orders, and $45.00 in usage charges has been billed. You upgrade to Growth (600 included, $0.20 per extra order) and end the month at 900 orders.
- Usage owed under Growth
- (900 − 600) × $0.20= $60.00
- Still to bill after the upgrade
- $60.00 − $45.00= $15.00
- Same month on Starter
- (900 − 300) × $0.30= $180.00
Example: downgrade in the middle of the month
You are on Pro (1,500 included, $0.10 per extra order). On October 15 you have 1,000 orders and no usage charge so far. You downgrade to Growth (600 included, $0.20 per extra order).
- Billed with the next daily usage charge
- (1,000 − 600) × $0.20= $80.00
If you want a smaller plan because of a quiet season, downgrade in the first days of a calendar month. Late in a busy month, every order of that month already counts against the smaller allowance.
Downgrading Below Your Current Usage#
Profitario does not block a downgrade when your account is above the new plan's limits. If the new plan includes fewer stores than you have connected, a dialog lists the stores that will be locked before you go to Shopify; click Continue to go ahead. This is what happens per limit:
| Limit | What happens after the downgrade |
|---|---|
| Orders | Nothing is blocked. Orders above the new allowance are charged at the new plan's overage rate, up to its cap. |
| Stores | The stores above the new limit are locked. Their pages and every combined Dashboard View show Plan limit reached. The stores you connected most recently are the ones locked. |
| Integrations | No change. Every paid plan includes unlimited integrations. |
| Team members | No change. No plan limits the number of team members. |
Example: too many stores
An account on Pro has four stores and downgrades to Growth, which includes 3. The store connected last is locked: its pages show Plan limit reached with the line You have 4 connected shops. Your plan allows 3. The three other stores keep working, and so does the overview. To unlock the fourth store, upgrade again or uninstall the Profitario app from one of the stores in Shopify.
Changing Plan During the Free Trial#
The 14-day free trial applies to the first paid subscription of an account. A plan change during the trial ends it: the new plan is charged from the day you approve it. To keep the trial, wait until it ends before you switch. See How the 14-Day Trial Works.
Moving From a Legacy Plan#
If you are on a plan that is no longer offered, the Current Plan card shows a Legacy plan notice. Click View Details in it to see your current included orders, stores and usage rate, and compare them with the plans on Plans. On that page no column is marked as your current plan. The closest current plan (Starter for Basic (Legacy), Growth for Pro (Legacy)) shows Switch, cheaper plans show Downgrade and larger plans Upgrade.
Moving to a current plan gives up your legacy plan for good. It cannot be chosen again.
Monthly or Annual Billing#
Every plan is billed every 30 days through Shopify. There is no annual option.
Discount Codes#
A plan change has no field for a discount code. Shopify charges the price shown on Plans.
The Store That Pays#
With several stores, the subscription is billed through one of them. Keep that store selected when you change plans. If you pick another store in the Select billing store dialog, the new plan is billed through that store and the subscription on the old store ends without a credit for its remaining days. To move billing to another store without changing the plan, click Change next to Billed through on the Current Plan card.
Troubleshooting#
"Could not start the plan change. Please try again." The request to Shopify did not go through, and nothing changed. Wait a minute and try again.
"Your Shopify store could not be reached." The store that would pay is closed, paused or no longer has the app installed. Reopen the store in Shopify or reinstall the app. With several stores, pick another store in the Select billing store dialog.
"No store available to bill. Connect a store first." No store with the Profitario app installed belongs to your account. Install the app on a store, then try again.
"Charge not approved." The charge was declined in Shopify or the approval page expired. Your plan did not change. Pick the plan again.
"Almost there" stays on the screen. Shopify is still processing the charge. Click Check again after a few seconds.
"Something went wrong" after approving. Click Try again. If you did approve the charge in Shopify, the new plan is also applied in the background within a few minutes. Open Billing again to check.
Still stuck? Write to support@profitario.com and include the email address you log in with, the store that pays for Profitario, the plan you wanted, and the time you tried.
